- I found this song one day while I was searching for new songs to sing.
I thought, "wow, it's so beautiful" and I wanted to sing it...but I couldn't find the music so I had to play it and ... I had to sing it. :)
I really enjoyed doing the music and the harmonies :D
It's a British naval song from 1795. I'm Spanish and I'm sorry but I didn't know it and I thought it was a very beautiful song. Although It's sad...
I loved... I listened to many versions - Sarah Blasko and more - and I wanted to do mine... so I hope you enjoy as much as I did singing for you!

LYRICS
Farewell and adieu, to ye fair Spanish Ladies,
Farewell and adieu, ye ladies of Spain;
For we've received orders to sail for ol' England,
But we hope that it's short-lived, to see you again.
[Chorus}:
We will rant and we'll roar like true British sailors,
We'll rant and we'll rave across the salt sea.
Until we strike soundings in the channel of old
England;
From Ushant to Scilly is thirty five leagues.
We hove our ship to, with the wind at sou'west, boys
We hove our ship to, for it takes soundings clear;
At fifty-five fathoms, with a fine sandy bottom,
We filled our main topsail up channel did steer.
[Chorus]
The the signal was made for the grand fleet to anchor,
We put up our topsail and struck tacks and sheets;
We stood by our stoppers and bridled and spankered,
And anchored ahead of the noblest fleet.
[Chorus]
Let every man here drink up his full bumper,
Let every man here drink up his full bow;
And we will be jolly and drown melancholy,
Drink a health to each jovial of each true-hearted
soul.
[Chorus]
extra verses:
The first land we sighted was called the Dodman,
Next Rame Head off Plymouth, off Portsmouth the Wight;
We sailed by Beachy, by Fairlight and Dover,
And then we bore up for the South Foreland light.
[Chorus]
Then the signal was made for the grand fleet to anchor,
And all in the Downs that night for to lie;
Let go your shank painter, let go your cat stopper!
Haul up your clewgarnets, let tacks and sheets fly!
its mt 39th year of going to sea. I have lost track of the number of times I have made landfall at scilly or ushant. .. its always a good feeling having made it across the Atlantic and you can seek comfort being in the channel after a rough crossing. the song bring back some good memories. thanks from an old Cap'n

What an incredibly beautiful woman. I normally like germanics or nordics but in this case - WOW!

what a wonderful experience, to hear 'Spanish Ladies' sung by a beautiful Spanish Lady... amazing
I would have refused those orders if those Spanish ladies looked and sounded like you. Truly tranquil and serenity.
A truly amazing voice that does this great Naval song justice
+Chris Griffiths many thanks.... :) wonderful comment
Really great cover Helena. This song is such a man's song about the pain of having to leave your woman and making that choice between your commitment someone you love and commitment to your country. About living with a bunch of other guys in an enclosed space like a ship and how thinking about your lady can give you solace. Totally changes the perspective when a woman does a version of the song. Can't help but think about what the woman is thinking about having her man go away for a long time. Even better having a Spanish Lady sing it just kind of deepens that. Thanks so much again.
Yeah that is why this is my single favourite version of this song - sounds way more haunting and melancholic from that perspective.
beautiful version of an old old song. Wonderful. Thank you Helena Cinto.
I love her accent...sung like a true Spanish lady. I could have her sing me this to sleep every night.
Thank you :)
@@HelenaCinto you have a very nice voice 👍

I've had this song on my favorites list for years now and I never get tired of listening to it. Back when I was reading the Aubrey-Maturin series I especially enjoyed listening to it. I'd always liked the song but didn't fully appreciate or understand it until I read the books. Thank you Ms. Cinto for sharing such a beautiful version of this song with us.
We are entertaining a Spanish lady to dinner next Saturday and I've been singing the lines 'farewell and adieu' etc. My wife wanted to hear the whole song and that's how I found you. What a lovely voice and style you have. With all good wishes you have a new subscriber

Suddenly I feel the need to run to sea and set out for where ever the wind blows
hitmanVCL with a heading toward Spain me thinks.
23Seana I’ll join you guys
The phrasing is immaculate, particularly on the line "from Ushant to Scilly is 35 leagues" . Really brings out the melancholy and wistfulness of this shanty, not so obvious in other versions.
Jason Luscher thank you Jason :)
That’s absolutely the best version of that song I’ve ever heard.
A beautiful, haunting rendition.
God Heavens! Bravo Helen!! Greetings from seamen!!!

@@HelenaCinto Thank you, Dear Lady, I shall!! In fact, I'm a historian teaching college classes in Louisiana, USA. I love to include films and the music of the time periods I lecture about during the course of my daily classes in order to give them a "feel" for the periods being discussed, even as I lecture. I'd love to use this and some of your other historical renditions, if that's acceptable to you. For instance, I lecture on the contributions of the British navy to British Imperial history, and I'd love to play this song as we discuss the topic, if you don't mind. :o)
Tipper Glenmar of course you can! You must be a good teacher 😊 I love the idea of music/history. And in music, that’s my favorite :Finding old songs, very old songs with a big charge of history in them. Im
So feel free to pick any song... 😊😊😊 and if you have a song in mind and I didn’t sing, please tell me 😊😊 greetings from Spain

@@HelenaCinto Thank You Helena, I only found your Wonderful Voice yesterday morning when I heard you sing Dacw Nghariad. I had never heard this song before, and so you brought to me the extra pleasure of filling in an hour by writing a modern lyric to it. So, Thank 'You' once again. Best, Jamie

Oh this is very lovely! I stumbled upon it while looking for Spanish Ladies, and then I listened to your other songs and they're all really good! Will be forwarding this to my sea shanty fan friends. Please do more sea shanties! I recommend the Mingulay Boat Song! We used to sing it on peaceful evenings at sunset when I was on the sailing vessel Hawaiian Chieftain.
Agreed one word to describe beautiful
I was researching the origins of this sad song and came across Helena's beautiful cover, absolutely fantastic
Beautiful! I first learned about this song watching the classic movie, 'Jaws.' It's a beautiful melody and very touching. Your voice is lovely. Classic old British Sailing Shanty.

A beautiful rendition of a song that is so full of meaning.
As an Ex- True British Sailor, I thoroughly enjoyed that; it brought a tear to my eye. Fantastically beautiful, far better than our own rantings.

A wonderful version and my favourite. This magical and uplifting song echoes in the soul and creates images in the mind. To hear it sung so beautifully with a Spanish influence makes it even more memorable. Fantastic!!
☺️☺️🥰thank you
@@HelenaCinto thank you to you for recording this and sharing with the world! Is very special. 👍
Helena reminds me of a “ Spanish Lady “ a real beauty, long hair, which was “ raven blue/ black. The epitome of a Spanish Beauty. She also spoke four languages. Happy Days, gone by. !!!!!
A beautiful rendition sung by a lovely woman ❤️
Goosebumps the entire time. You transport me away
Sacreligious Sausage thank you so much :)
Helena Cinto Are you Spannish? Your voice is so exotic and (sexy) haha
Sacreligious Sausage yes i am 😄
Helena Cinto I love spannish guitar music, and Spannish singing. More traditional than modern. Makes me happy. You are very tallented!
Sacreligious Sausage you are very welcome here.. thanks for your kindness :)
Wow - amazing voice and song. Never heard it before and found it per random. Haunting and mystical.
I have now heard the other versions of the song incl Sarah Blasko but somehow Helenas version stand out to me; slowing the tempo benefits the song and the words stand clearer. Something in the chorus gives is some extra power although I cant really point the magic out :)
☺️thank you so much Lars
What a truly wonderful version, thank you.
"There's no such thing as mermaids" [Hears this and steers ship onto the rocks] "Wtf just happened??"
😂
Years ago I picked up some items from home, including a bag of old coins, and there in the bottom was a great gold medal from The Battle of The Nile 1798, made out to a seaman called “Mullen” on a ship called “Audacious” I think it was from my grandmothers family. Sea spray sheets and sail are in our history and culture, the greatest seafaring nation in history.
We don’t call each other “mate” for nothing.
Well, there is a very lucky Spanish man out there somewhere. An amazing rendition of the song; hopefully, she gets recognised her voice is fantastic
danj945 thank you so much :)
de nada :)
Absolutely amazing!
You should advertise your videos because you sing great! your videos just need to be known by more people.
Thank you so much Alex
So surreal to heart his sung with a Spanish accent. Beautiful cover.
